PHOENIX – The bodies of both kayakers who went missing in the Salt River April 9 have been recovered, police said Sunday.

The first body was found Saturday. Police identified him as 38-year-old Shane Coates. The body was recovered near 19th Avenue, the Phoenix Police Department said in a tweet on Saturday.

The man recovered Sunday has not yet been identified although police believe it was the second missing kayaker. His body was recovered from the Salt River near 71st Avenue.

The men were reported missing near 19th Avenue and Broadway Road, the Phoenix Fire Department said in a press release.

Rescuers searched a mile up and down the river from the last place the men were seen and had not received reports that they exited the water.

Detectives will take over the scene where the body was recovered. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner will make a positive ID and determine the cause of death.

We want to hear from you.
