3 killed in fiery head-on collision near Loop 101 in north Phoenix

PHOENIX – Three people were killed in a fiery head-on collision on a Phoenix street late Thursday, authorities said.

The Phoenix Police Department said three vehicles were involved in the crash on 19th Avenue north of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway.

Officers responded to the scene around 11:20 p.m. and saw one of the cars on fire, police said.

The driver of the car, whose identity was not released, was pronounced dead after firefighters extinguished the flames.

Abelino Diaz, 18, was driving another vehicle south in the northbound lanes of 19th Avenue when collision occurred, police said.

He and his passenger, 38-year-old Octaviano Giron, died of their injuries after being extricated from the car and taken to a hospital.

A man and a woman in a third damaged vehicle were uninjured.

No other details were made available. The investigation is ongoing.
