PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Friday around 260 pills were seized in the jail system in the last week.
The pills, believed to be fentanyl but are pending lab testing, were seized during three unique incidents, MCSO said in a press release.
The first incident happened when an inmate was observed handing another inmate pills, the release said.
After obtaining a search warrant, 160 pills were found inside the inmate’s body.
The second seizure happened during a routine search at the time of booking.
The male inmate had 65 pills on his person, MCSO said.
The third incident also happened during a search at booking when a woman had 35 pills concealed in a bag inside her body.
All inmates attempted to bring the suspected fentanyl into the Intake, Transfer and Release (ITR) facility.
Sheriff Paul Penzone praised the workers at facilities that are committed to keeping the lives of others safe.
“Professionalism and high integrity will be the defining attributes of the men and women in this organization,” Penzone said in the release.
