PHOENIX — Tempe named Josie Montenegro its police department’s interim chief on Friday after Gov. Katie Hobbs appointed Police Chief Jeffrey Glover as director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Glover’s last day with Tempe PD is scheduled for Feb. 13, after which Montenegro will begin her new role.

Montenegro is the department’s assistant chief and has 22 years of experience with Tempe police. She was a patrol officer and commander before taking up her current position.

“We place a high value on public safety in Tempe, and I know that Assistant Chief Montenegro will continue the tradition of leadership and service in the role of interim chief,” City Manager Andrew Ching said in a press release. “I am grateful to her for stepping up to serve in this capacity at my request.”

Tempe has begun taking applications for the permanent role of police chief.

The East Valley city is conducting a national search and will start to review applications on Feb. 20.

Glover was appointed as Tempe’s interim chief of police in October 2020 and took over on a permanent basis in August 2021.
