PHOENIX — This week on Arizona’s News Roundup, we highlight two priorities of Arizona’s new governor for the legislative session.

We also bring you the details of the border visit by Arizona’s U.S. senators, along with lawmakers from around the country.

And we learn more about the arrest of a Maricopa Count Sheriff’s Office detention officer accused of trying to bring drugs into county jails.

Here’s an overview of the topics covered:

State of the State address

Gov. Katie Hobbs delivered her first State of the State address on Monday, which aired live on KTAR News 92.3 FM and live streamed at KTAR.com.

Hobbs noted education and water as major topics of focus.

Arizona’s U.S. senators visit the border

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) led a bipartisan group of senators on Tuesday to visit the southern border near Yuma.

She also held a roundtable discussion with fellow lawmakers and regional local leaders and community advocates. The purpose of the roundtable was to hear concerns about the surge of migrants at the border and the effects on their communities.

Inmates at MCSO jails affected by drugs, detention officer arrested

Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone announced scanning machines will soon be installed at jailhouses to detect for drugs and other contraband entering and exiting the facilities.

The announcement came during a press conference Wednesday moments after Penzone said a detention officer who had been working at the Lower Buckeye Jail was arrested for attempting to smuggle pills into the facility.

We want to hear from you.
