With all eyes on Mega Millions, Powerball ticket sold in Chandler wins $1M

Jan 6, 2023, 1:30 PM

PHOENIX — While the spotlight has been on a Mega Millions jackpot nearing $1 billion, a ticket worth a cool million in a different lottery game was purchased in the Valley this week.

A $1 million winner in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing was sold at the QuikTrip at Arizona Avenue and Germann Road in Chandler.

The ticket matched the white balls of 12, 32, 56, 67 and 68 but missed the red Powerball of 26.

The Powerball jackpot will be an estimated $325 million for the next drawing on Saturday. That’s a nice chunk of change, but it pales in comparison to what’s been happening in the other major national lottery.

The Mega Millions jackpot will be an estimated $940 million for Friday night’s drawing. The prize has been growing for more than two months and now ranks as the sixth-largest for any lottery in U.S history.

The big number is for winners who choose an annuity, paid annually over 29 years. The cash option for Friday night’s drawing would yield an estimated $483.5 million.

While the Mega Millions jackpot went unclaimed in Tuesday’s drawing, a ticket purchased in Arizona netted a $4 million windfall.

An entry sold at the TA Travel Center in Tonopah, south of Interstate 10 on 339th Avenue, matched the five white balls in Tuesday’s drawing — 25, 29, 33, 41 and 44 — but missed the Mega Ball of 18. The $1 million cash prize for five numbers was quadrupled through the game’s Megaplier option.

Mega Millions tickets cost $2, with drawings Tuesdays and Fridays. Powerball entries also are $2 per entry, with drawings Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
