PHOENIX — A man was fatally shot after he allegedly lunged toward police with a knife in Phoenix Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The incident occurred near 35th Avenue and Broadway Road around 10:30 a.m. when officers responded to the area for a report of a residential burglary, the Phoenix Police Department said at a press conference

While investigating the incident, officers encountered a man armed with a knife, police said.

Officers tased the man multiple times after he refused to listen to commands to drop the weapon.

The man then allegedly lunged toward the officers and he was shot, police said.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to a hospital where he died.

No officers were injured, police added.

The shooting was the first by Valley law enforcement in 2023, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
