PHOENIX — Kari Lake’s election challenge was tossed, a Scottsdale-based developer plans to convert a Phoenix hotel into apartments and the fiancé of Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb’s son died Friday from injuries she sustained in a car crash.
Here are some of the biggest stories that headlined the Arizona news cycle over the holiday weekend.
Kari Lake’s lawsuit to overturn election results thrown out, Lake to appeal
Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake’s lawsuit over the results of the election was thrown out by a Maricopa County Superior Court judge on Saturday, ruling Democrat Katie Hobbs as Arizona Governor-Elect.
Lake lost to Democrat Katie Hobbs by just over 17,000 votes out of 2.6 million cast.
She attempted to prove in a two-day hearing that ballot printers malfunctioned in Maricopa County because of intentional interference by election officials and that ballots were improperly added at a county contractor that handles returned mail ballots.
Lake announced shortly after the lawsuit results that she will be appealing.
Developer plans to convert aging Phoenix hotel into apartments
Scottsdale-based Caliber Cos. is in the process of building a new multifamily complex and repurposing an aging hotel for new apartments in the Phoenix area.
The existing Four Points By Sheraton Phoenix South Mountain hotel, which Caliber Cos. currently owns, is located at an overall 8-acre site in Maricopa County on the southwest corner of Elliot Road and Interstate 10.
The site is located in the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix within a large commercial core and within a 20-minute drive of Intel Corp.’s semiconductor campus in Chandler.
Fiancé of Cooper Lamb, Sheriff Lamb’s late son, dies from car crash injuries
The fiancé of Cooper Lamb, Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb’s son, died Friday from injuries she sustained in a car crash a week earlier, the sheriff said.
“Last night, our sweet Caroline passed away,” Lamb said in a Facebook post on Saturday. “She went home to be with Cooper and Elaine. Please keep her family in your prayers.”
Lamb’s son and 1-year-old grandchild, Elaine, died in the Gilbert crash near Elliott and Recker roads on Dec. 16, according to the Gilbert Police Department.
Person dies after wrong-way crash on Loop 101 in East Valley
One person died after a three-vehicle, wrong-way crash in Scottsdale on Saturday morning, authorities said.
Police responded to reports of a wrong-way driver just before 2 a.m. near Raintree Drive and the Loop 101.
When police arrived they found a three-vehicle collision with one fatality.
The driver was reportedly driving southbound in the northbound lanes on the Loop 101, police said in a press release.
Mark Brnovich says Tucson’s ‘source of income’ rental ordinance violates state law
Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich is ordering the city of Tucson to repeal a law prohibiting landlords from denying potential tenants because of how they make their money.
Brnovich said in a news release Thursday that Tucson’s “source of income” ordinance violates state law.
The state’s top prosecutor argues the Arizona Legislature in 1992 passed legislation allowing large cities and towns to devise local fair housing measures. However, the measures had to be approved by Jan. 1, 1995. This current ordinance comes 27 years too late, Brnovich said.
