PHOENIX — The massive winter storm stretching across the U.S. continued to wreak havoc on flights to and from Phoenix on Friday, one of the busiest travel days of the year.

As of around 3:30 p.m., 111 flights scheduled into or out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport had been canceled, and another 338 were delayed, according to tracking site FlightAware.

Seattle, Chicago, Portland and Detroit were among the cities with the most cancellations to or from Phoenix.

Nationwide, more than 7,991 flights within, into or out of the U.S. were canceled, causing mayhem for travelers trying to make it home for the holidays.

More than 200 million people — about 60% of the U.S. population — were under some form of winter weather advisory or warning on Friday, the National Weather Service said.

On Thursday, Sky Harbor experienced 81 cancellations and 493 delays.

Officials are advising Phoenix travelers to use the airport’s free PHX Sky Train system to avoid heavy traffic around the terminals.

A new station at 24th Street opened earlier this week, just in time for the holiday travel season. The station is just south of Buckeye Road, on the western edge of the airport.

The train now spans from the car rental center west of the airport to the Valley Metro light rail station at 44th and Washington streets. In between, it stops at the 24th Street Station, both terminals and the East Economy parking lot.
