PHOENIX — A suspect is in custody after three people were wounded when gunfire broke out during a street fight in Mesa on Sunday night, authorities said.
Daniel Omar Berrelleza-Reyes, 23, was arrested and booked for aggravated assault after the incident in a neighborhood near Broadway Road and Horne, according to court documents.
Officers were on their way to the area after being dispatched for a fight around 10 p.m. when Berrelleza-Reyes allegedly opened fire.
Berrelleza-Reyes called police and reported where the weapon could be found, and then he self-surrendered to officers near Main Street and Stapley Drive, about a mile from where the shooting occurred.
After being read his rights, the suspect allegedly told police he was trying to defend himself and his cousin after they got into a fight with another group because of a parking dispute.
“The defendant could not describe his assailants other than that they were large in stature. He said that when he wiggled away and retrieved his gun, the other males had disengaged and were retreating from him, but he fired his gun at them anyways,” the probable cause statement for the Berrelleza-Reyes arrest says.
He allegedly fired three times, once at one of the men he’d been fighting and twice into a crowd. One of the victims possibly suffered life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
