PHOENIX – Dozens of people were evacuated from their homes Thursday morning after flooding drenched units at a Scottsdale condominium complex.

The Scottsdale Fire Department said at least 83 people were evacuated from 63 condos at the three-story Bella Vista Condos complex near 94th Street and Thunderbird Road after a pipe burst in an attic.

No one was injured.

“The water has done extensive damage. We’ve got 6 inches of water in the hallway of the first floor,” Fire Capt. Dave Folio told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

The elevator was knocked out of the commission and some elderly residents got help from firefighters getting down the stairs.

Utilities companies secured power and water to the complex, Folio said.

“It’s just an unfortunate time [of year] for this to happen,” he said.

The Red Cross was at the scene helping those affected.

About 45-50 firefighters, police officers and ambulance workers initially responded, but by around 10 a.m. operations had been scaled back, Folio said.

“We’re still going to each door that we haven’t identified as evacuated. Some people are at work. They’re going to come home, unfortunately, to a lot of workers on scene, a lot of water,” he said.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Taylor Kinnerup contributed to this report.
