PHOENIX — A metro Phoenix domestic violence shelter has opened a dog park tailored to survivors and their pets.
The facility at New Life Center’s Goodyear hub is an extension of an enclosed basketball area and was funded by a $175,000 grant from PetSmart Charities.
“After a year of long-awaited planning and construction, we’re so excited that this park is now open for our four-legged residents,” shelter CEO Myriah Mhoon said in a press release.
“Animals play an essential role during a survivor’s healing journey and these new amenities will ensure their stay at the shelter is as comfortable as possible.”
Funding also helps support pet housing in the shelter and fostering options off-site through a partnership with a local animal program.
Those staying at the shelter are provided with private casitas, allowing animals to stay without the need for a kennel.
NLC provides food, veterinary care, leashes, collars, crates and toys for residents’ pets.
“Ensuring that refuges are pet-friendly helps victims escape, knowing their pets will be welcome and safe,” Kate Atema, an executive PetSmart Charities, said.
“During times of crises, pets and people need each other more than ever, and we applaud New Life Center’s innovative thinking.”
