PHOENIX – Tempe police took two people into custody after a car chase that came to an end 200 feet down a Phoenix ravine Tuesday night.
The Tempe Police Department said the pursuit began around 8:15 p.m. when officers were investigating a vehicle believed to be stolen.
Two people were inside the vehicle near 40th Street and University Drive in Phoenix, police said. Officers tried to make a traffic stop but the driver escaped, hitting a patrol unit in the process.
Police said they broke off the chase a short while later when the driver began speeding and maneuvering erratically.
Patrolling officers spotted the vehicle again in an industrial area not too far from the traffic stop, down a ravine at the Salt River near Interstate 10 and University, police said.
One suspect was detained at the ravine, but a technical rescue team from the Phoenix Fire Department was called to extricate the other from the vehicle.
Firefighters had to cut a hole through a chain link fence so they could lower the equipment necessary to make the rescue.
After the extrication, the other suspect was taken into custody.
Both suspects were treated for minor injuries at a hospital, police said.
