PHOENIX — Storms scattered across the Valley over the weekend left residents without power and broke new rainfall records, and U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona wants solutions for Title 42.

Here are some of the biggest stories that headlined the Arizona news cycle over the weekend.

Storm leaves rain through entirety of Valley on Saturday, some lost power

A storm hit the Valley on Saturday, leaving rain spread out to all corners of Maricopa County and many are without power.

Sky Harbor saw 0.51 inches hitting as of 4 p.m. and the average Phoenix metro rainfall was at .36 inches. The East Valley got the brunt of the rain, with some areas reaching 0.75-0.87 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

APS reported an outage affecting 764 people just south of Cave Creek with 0.04 inches of rain in the area but was fixed before 2 p.m., according to the company’s outage map.

Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema pushing for Title 42 solutions as deadline nears

U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona wants solutions for Title 42, the COVID-related border policy that limited asylum-seekers’ entry to the United States that is set to end in three weeks.

Sinema told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show on Friday that she believes the number of migrants at the border could quadruple without a good plan in place.

“The numbers are just astronomical right now and we don’t have a legal system that is robust enough to decide quickly who who can legally come into the country and who can’t,” Sinema said.

Weekend storm sets new daily rain record in Phoenix

Recent storms passing across the Valley set new rainfall records at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Saturday.

Sky Harbor set a new daily rainfall record of .76 inches, surpassing the old record of .69 inches in 1908, according to the National Weather Service in Phoenix.

The number also topped rainfall totals of .62 inches recorded on Oct. 15 and Sept. 11, and .58 inches on Aug. 4, making it the wettest day of 2022.

Dec. 3 made its way into the top 50 wettest December days on the Phoenix record since recording began in 1895.
