PHOENIX — A man with a knife was hospitalized in stable condition after an officer-involved shooting occurred in Phoenix on Saturday morning, authorities said.

Police responded to the area of 27th Avenue and Thomas Road just after 9:30 a.m. to reports of a subject threatening people with a knife, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release.

Officers found the individual who matched the description, allegedly ordered him to drop the knife and fired a non-lethal projectile launcher.

The man allegedly ran west on Thomas Road still wielding the knife.

Police chased the subject down, firing multiple more non-lethal shots that were unsuccessful in gaining compliance.

The man turned on 29th Avenue toward an occupied vehicle, which is when police said they shot him.

The man was rendered aid and taken to a hospital by the Phoenix Fire Department with serious injuries. No officers or other community members were injured in the incident, authorities said.

The suspect was later identified as 53-year-old John Torp. He was booked into Maricopa County Jail on multiple counts, including assault, after his release from the hospital.
