The Phoenix Police Department said the wreck shut down an area near Sky Harbor Airport at 16th Street and Interstate 17 around 3:45 a.m.

Police said a woman and a man were heading northbound on 16th Street before slamming into a tree near Mohave Street.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The woman was identified later as Jasmin Garcia Romero, 23.

The investigation shut down 16th Street in both directions from Mohave to the freeway.
