PHOENIX – Police are piecing together the events of a fatal shooting that rocked a Chandler neighborhood earlier this week.

A suspect was arrested after he allegedly broke into a home near the homicide scene and ended up being held at gunpoint by a resident, the Chandler Police Department said.

Korey William Sandusky Jr., 27, was booked into Maricopa County Jail on multiple counts related to the break-in: aggravated assault, first-degree burglary, kidnapping and possession of a weapon by a prohibited person.

Police said more charges are expected.

Officers responded to a shooting call at an apartment near Pecos Road and Arizona Avenue around 3 p.m. Wednesday and found two victims. A 19-year-old man died that night at a hospital, and a 17-year-old female was hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

According to court documents, Sandusky had been seen fleeing the shooting site. The break-in occurred a few blocks away.

A man and woman in the house saw Sandusky in the backyard near a shed, which had its door torn off, according to the probable cause statement for Sandusky’s arrest.

When the man opened the back door, Sandusky charged, causing the door to hit the man in the head, the probable cause statement said.

Once inside, Sandusky allegedly chased down the woman, who had run to a bedroom, and began to choke her. She fell and injured her head, police said.

By then, the man had armed himself and threatened to shoot Sandusky, police said.

Sandusky ran out the back door, and the victims called police. He got as far as the front yard when the man caught up and held Sandusky at gunpoint until police arrived.

Police said they found two handguns inside the shed that the two residents said didn’t belong to them.

One of those weapons, police said, had the same type of bullet casings that were consistent with the shooting scene.

An unnamed 28-year-old man was also jailed on a misdemeanor warrant, and police are working to determine what role he played in the incidents.
