PHOENIX — Republican Rachel Mitchell leads Democrat Julie Gunnigle for Maricopa County attorney.
Mitchell had a 52%-48% lead on Sunday evening, according to the Maricopa County Elections Department. A lead she has held for several days.
Mitchell is up by 45,477 votes over Gunnigle.
Mitchell, the Republican nominee and interim county attorney, was appointed in April following the resignation of Allister Adel. Adel died a month after she stepped down.
Mitchell previously served as acting Maricopa County attorney in 2019 when Bill Montgomery was appointed to the Arizona Supreme Court.
Gunnigle lost to Adel by under 2 percentage points in 2020.
She previously served as assistant state’s attorney in Cook County, Ill., and as a professor of law in Phoenix.
The two raced to serve the remainder of Adel’s term, with the winner up for reelection again in 2024.
