PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix fatally shot an armed man in a parking lot Wednesday afternoon.

The Phoenix Police Department said in a press release they were called to a strip mall near 35th Avenue and McDowell Road around 4:30 p.m.

Police said the 911 caller reported a man was pointing a gun at him. Officers said when they reached the location, multiple people with guns were in the parking lot.

The suspect aimed his gun at the other people in the lot, police said. “This was when the officer-involved shooting occurred,” they said.

After the suspect was down, officers tried to get him to show his hands. When he didn’t respond, police said they went to him to render aid until paramedics arrived.

The suspect, identified later as 29-year-old Leontae Kirk, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a gun was near him.

No other information was made available.

The investigation is ongoing.
