PHOENIX — An El Mirage woman was arrested for allegedly shooting a Circle K employee after shoplifting, Maynard James Keenan is growing his Arizona wine empire and more funding for high-speed internet is headed to rural Arizona communities.

Here are some of the biggest stories that headlined the Arizona news cycle over the weekend.


Circle K employee shot by woman accused of shoplifting in Surprise

El Mirage police arrested a 23-year-old woman for allegedly shooting a Circle K employee on Friday.

Kiana Viola of El Mirage, 23, was located at a nearby trailer park where a 30-year-old employee of the Circle K was found shot in the chest, according to a press release.

Viola was seen by the employee shoplifting several items. The employee, a woman, then followed Viola to the trailer park on foot where Viola is suspected of shooting the victim.


Tool’s Maynard James Keenan growing his Arizona wine empire with new tasting room

Rocker Maynard James Keenan’s Arizona wine empire is growing like well-tended grapevines.

The singer for Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle is opening a new tasting room, Four Eight Wineworks, in Old Town Cottonwood.

The wine bar is set to debut Nov. 16 at 816 N. Main Street. Cottonwood is about 100 miles north of Phoenix, between Prescott and Sedona.


Arizona gets $17M in funding for 2 rural high-speed internet projects

Two rural Arizona cities received approximately $17.1 million in federal funding for the investment in high-speed internet projects, the United States Department of Agriculture announced Thursday.

The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority will get just over $7 million and the Tohono O’odham Utility Authority will use a $10 million grant for investments to connect thousands of people, businesses and schools to high-speed internet, according to a nationwide announcement of $759 million from the USDA.

The projects are funded through the third funding round of the ReConnect Program.


Flu, respiratory illnesses creeping up in metro Phoenix as temperatures go down

The holiday season is approaching but another season is already here – cold and flu season.

Throw COVID-19 into the mix and respiratory illnesses are climbing in Arizona, a health expert told KTAR News 92.3 FM earlier this week.

“We definitely want people to take steps to help protect themselves moving forward as we start entering respiratory infection season,” Dr. Eugene Livar with Arizona Department of Health Services said.


Chandler approves public housing development project for seniors

The Chandler City Council on Thursday approved an agreement to co-develop an affordable housing site in the East Valley.

A five-acre site located at the southeast corner of McQueen Road and Chandler Boulevard will have about 157 housing units once completed by early 2025, the city of Chandler said in a press release.

The units will include one- to five-bedroom spaces, along with a multigenerational community space and park area.
