Think Tank breaks down Arizona Proposition 209 on medical debt collection

This week’s Think Tank explores one of the voter initiatives that may have escaped your attention.
Proposition 209 will exempt more home equity, vehicles, household goods and bank accounts that may be taken by creditors. It also limits the amount that can be garnished from wages.
Will Humble is the executive director for the Arizona Public Health Association that has endorsed this measure. His 35 years in public health included more than two decades at the Arizona Department of Health Services, where he served in various capacities including as the agency director from 2009 to 2015.
Christian Lehr has been the owner of a medical debt collection company since 1999 and is on the board of directors for ACA International, the collection industry association. He opposes this measure.
