PHOENIX – Two of the larger cities in the Valley will have almost $9.2 million at their disposal immediately to help renters stave off eviction, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors said.

The board announced Thursday further funding of the emergency rental assistance programs in Mesa and Glendale.

The programs in both cities had run out of funds and they had stopped accepting applications from people needing help to pay for rent and utilities.

Mesa now has $5.5 million at its disposal and Glendale nearly $3.7 million.

“Maricopa County has provided nearly $100 million in direct rent and utility assistance to residents over the past two years, and we are happy now to support a couple of our largest cities in extending their ERA programs,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Gates said in a press release.

“The Board will continue to look for opportunities to serve residents, whether through innovative programs, necessary services, or emergency assistance.”

As of October, the county has paid more than $105 million in assistance to residents, according to the board.

More than $93 million has been used to pay rent and over $12 million to prevent utility shutoffs, the board added. The average spent per applicant on rent is $9,554 while the average utility payment per claim is $1,371.
