PHOENIX — A woman was arrested in Arizona after approximately 36 kilograms of fentanyl were seized from the vehicle she was in during a traffic stop.

Maria Fernanda Granillo-Velasquez of Mexico, 21, was charged in August for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona said in a press release.

A criminal complaint alleges that Granillo-Velasquez was pulled over on Interstate 10 in Pinal County by sheriffs for a traffic stop of the vehicle she was driving and the sole occupant of.

While officers were conducting the traffic stop, a canine trained in detecting narcotics alerted them to the presence of narcotics.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of about 21 packages containing approximately 360,000 blue pills stamped “M30.”

She faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum term of life in prison if convicted.

Granillo-Velasquez’s trial is scheduled for Nov. 1.
