Police looking for man suspected of scamming elderly Chandler woman out of $3,700

Sep 19, 2022, 2:00 PM

PHOENIX – Police in Chandler are looking for a man they say posed as an auto club employee to scam an elderly woman out of nearly $4,000 earlier this year.

The suspect showed up at the woman’s home in May and said he worked for AAA, the Chandler Police Department said Monday in a press release. He told her it looked like one of the tires was about to fall off her vehicle but he could fix it for $3,700.

He went to the bank with the victim, who withdrew the amount in cash. He then left with the money without performing any work on the vehicle, police said.

Investigators used bank video surveillance to identify the suspect as Joe Miller.

“However, Miller is believed to go by many different names and may not currently be using that name,” Detective Eva Zermeño said in the release.

Anybody with information about finding the suspect, or other possible victims if his fraudulent schemes, was asked to call the Chandler police non-emergency number at 480-782-4130.

A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to the suspect’s location.

We want to hear from you.
