PHOENIX – East Valley motorists have a new way to get on and off the Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Gilbert.
After 20 months of construction, the Arizona Department of Transportation opened the Lindsay Road interchange in time for Friday morning’s commute.
The new freeway access is expected to improve the flow of traffic in the growing town’s Central Business District.
Until now, there was 2-mile gap between the Loop 202 exits at Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive.
The $21.7 million project, which started in January 2021, was a partnership among the town of Gilbert, the Maricopa Association of Governments and the Federal Highway Administration.

The work included new Loop 202 ramps to and from Lindsay Road plus the construction of a westbound freeway frontage road.
In addition, the eastbound off-ramp at Val Vista Drive and westbound off-ramp at Gilbert Road were widened.
Officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday morning.
“I’m grateful for the collaborative efforts between federal, state and regional partners that got us to the completion of this interchange,” Mayor Brigette Peterson said in a press release.
“As Arizona’s fifth largest municipality, it is critical that our community has safe and accessible transportation choices.”
