PHOENIX — One of Phoenix’s most popular trails will reopen to the public later this month after being shut down since last year.

“Knowing the public interest and popularity, I’m excited for the reopening of Cholla Trail as a safer trail experience for hikers and nearby residents,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said in a press release.

“This project in a win-win for residents and hikers alike. Yet, it is important to remember that — even with these wonderful new amenities — it is still very important to hike safely by taking the necessary precautions to avoid heat illness and hiking injuries.”

Cholla Trail at Camelback Mountain will open Sept. 30 and be available from sunrise to sunset.

It will feature new amenities for hikers and travelers, including water fountains, restrooms and bike racks, according to the release.

The realignment project included various improvements such as the removal of unstable boulders, the addition of trail posts and upgrades to the trail head.

Though water will be available, it won’t be chilled and restroom lights will not work until power can be provided sometime in late 2022.

Parking for the destination is located along Invergordon Road, which recently added spaces for ride-share services.

The Parks and Recreation Department, Street Transportation Department, Phoenix Fire Department and the town of Paradise Valley worked together on the project.

We want to hear from you.
