PHOENIX — Telecommunications giant AT&T is expanding its fiber internet to Mesa and is investing in a cable manufacturing facility in nearby Gilbert.
Mesa is expected to have the service in 2023, according to a press release.
More than 100,000 homes in the East Valley city will have speeds of up to 5 gigabytes of broadband.
“In an increasingly virtual world, access to high-speed internet is a key to success for individuals, families and business owners,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said.
“We welcome AT&T to Mesa as their team delivers fiber connectivity, ultimately creating better access to education, jobs and health care for our great city.”
AT&T’s partnership with fiber manufacturing supplier Corning Incorporated will help bring the upgraded internet to Mesa and around the West.
Corning will build the 317,000-square-foot facility at Park Lucero, the industrial park near Gilbert Road and the Loop 202 Santan Freeway.
“This new facility will provide additional optical cable capacity to meet the record demand the industry is seeing for fast, reliable connectivity,” Stankey said in a separate press release.
The facility, which is expected to open in 2024, will bring about 250 jobs to the area.
The Gilbert hub will be Corning’s westernmost U.S. manufacturing site for optical cable.
