Coconino National Forest implements new camping system near Sedona

PHOENIX — The Coconino National Forest on Friday announced the implementation of a new designated camping system on the Red Rock Ranger District west of Sedona.
The system will provide visitors with designated camping areas that also protect the area’s natural resources, according to a press release.
Eight new camping spaces will be available for campers and visitors to use with the “West Sedona Designated Dispersed Camping and Day-Use” area.
The camping areas expand nearly 36 acres and feature 10-35 campsites per area, the release said.
Depending on the size of vehicle, trailer or RV, a total of 150-200 campsites will be available.

Campers and visitors can access the designated areas via State Route 89A, with five of the areas located across Forest Road 525.
Two other locations are along FR 89B, with the final space located on FR 9570A, the release said.
“We have been gathering public comments, working with local residents, and many stakeholders and partners for years in order to implement this camping and day-use system,” Red Rock District Ranger Amy Tinderholt said.
A forest order has also been implemented that prohibits camping and campfires in the 32,130-acre space that makes up most of the national forest in west Sedona.
The campsites will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
