PHOENIX — An Arizona man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for shooting at a federal agent, authorities announced Wednesday.
Alejandro Nathaniel Rodriguez Stalter, 31, had previously pleaded guilty to one count of assault on a federal officer and one count of discharge of a firearm during a violent crime. The Casa Grande man was sentenced Monday.
Stalter fled an immigration checkpoint in August 2020 with two migrants inside his vehicle, according to a press release from the U.S. District Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.
Border Patrol agents chased Stalter’s vehicle for about 20 minutes until the suspect’s car crashed.
An agent approached the car and attempted to open the driver’s door but was shot at through the window by an AR-15 style assault rifle operated by Stalter.
The agent eventually shot back at Stalter, who was hit by a bullet and eventually surrendered.
The FBI conducted the investigation and Assistant U.S. Attorney Coleen Schoch for the District of Arizona in Phoenix handled the prosecution.
