PHOENIX – Another round of monsoon storms is expected to hit metro Phoenix on Wednesday, possibly creating hazardous driving conditions during the post-work rush hour.

National Weather Service meteorologist Isaac Smith said there was a 40%-50% chance for rain in the Valley this evening, with activity expected between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“We’ll be looking at the potential for heavy rain, which could also lead to areas of flash flooding,” Smith told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday morning.

“Also, we’ll be looking at the potential for strong winds that could result in some wind damage.”

After Wednesday night, the Phoenix area can expect a bit of break from the monsoon.

“By this weekend into early next week, we’re seeing those chances [for rain] drop below 20%,” Smith said.

Temperature-wise, the forecast calls for highs of around 100 degrees each day until a jump to 107 on Tuesday.

With about a month left in the official monsoon season, which runs from mid-June to the end of September, Phoenix has seen nearly 1.5 inches of rain. The 30-year average is 1.61 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

“Overall, it’s been a pretty good monsoon across the state,” Smith said. “Some areas have seen more rain than others, but, overall, we’ve seen some pretty good rain this season.”

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Jim Cross contributed to this report.
