PHOENIX — Suspects in separate Mesa police shootings within hours of each other suffered serious injuries, authorities said in updates Monday.

The first incident happened around 5 p.m. when officers located 36-year-old Kevin McKinney at a retail complex at Dobson and Baseline roads.

McKinney was wanted in New Mexico for murder and also had a felony warrant out of Colorado.

When SWAT officers attempted to arrest McKinney, he got into his Black Jeep Patriot and rammed police cars before crashing into a business, according to the Mesa Police Department.

Officers shot McKinney and he was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and is expected to survive.

About 10 hours later, officers were involved in another shooting incident.

Mesa police received a call at about 11:30 p.m. from a woman who said her front door was broken when she got home and heard someone in the house near Country Club Drive and Rio Salado Parkway.

When officers arrived, the suspect, a 21-year-old man who hasn’t been named, ran out of the house, jumped a wall and ended up barricading himself inside a nearby storage shed.

At about 3:30 a.m., the suspect shot rounds at a robot and drone before officers used less lethal tactics to get the man out of the shed.

The suspect then exited the shed and was shot by officers, according to Mesa police.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The shootings were the 10th and 11th by Mesa police this year and 38th and 39th overall by Valley law enforcement in 2022, according to KTAR News research.
