PHOENIX – A Valley man was arrested earlier this month for a fraudulent scheme involving a fake charity golf event, authorities said Sunday.
The Scottsdale Police Department said it received multiple reports about Robert Francis Alexander collecting money for a charity tournament at the private Silverleaf Club course on behalf of the Wounded Warrior Project.
The Wounded Warrior Project works to help veterans and military members who were injured while serving. The nonprofit group had no knowledge of Alexander’s activities, which occurred from May to July, police said.
Alexander, 57, also allegedly collected money to invest in buying golf balls to be sold in the Scottsdale area but failed to fulfill the agreement he made with investors, police said.
Scottsdale detectives determined that Alexander was involved in multiple fraudulent schemes and arrested him on Aug. 8 in Phoenix.
Anybody who believes they may have been a victim of fraud perpetrated by Alexander was asked to call the Scottsdale Police Department’s non-emergency number at 480-312-5000.
