Crews take on 4 fires in 2 hours as storms move across Phoenix

Jun 27, 2022, 8:57 AM

PHOENIX – Phoenix firefighters responded to a flurry of fires over a two-hour span Sunday as thunderstorms moved across the Valley.

Four fires broke out across the city, including one at a senior care facility, but no one was injured, the Phoenix Fire Department said.

At least three of the blazes were related to monsoon storm activity.

Downed power lines sparked a fire at an elder care site near 45th Street and Camelback Road around 4:30 p.m. Power was restored to the facility and the 10 residents were able to go back to their places, a fire department spokesman said.

The Scottsdale Fire Department assisted in putting out the blaze.

At 5:10 p.m., a burning tree sent Phoenix crews to a home near 19th and Dunlap avenues, where an elderly woman lived. Crews arrived to find the attic on fire, set off by the tree.

They were able to put out the fire quickly, they said.

Less than 20 minutes later, a crew was dispatched to a house burning from a lighting strike near Seventh Avenue and Baseline Road.

Firefighters reached the neighborhood to see heavy black smoke. The attic was on fire when they reached the home.

Crews speedily beat down the fire, a spokesman said.

They weren’t done yet.

At 6:27 p.m., crews were sent to a house near 19th Avenue and Baseline Road, where smoke and flames were doing damage.

The homeowners told firefighters they thought a lightning strike started the blaze.

Investigators are working to determine to the cause of each fire.
