3 hospitalized, 8 total rescued by Phoenix firefighters off Camelback Mountain

Jun 23, 2022, 3:30 PM

PHOENIX — Three hikers were hospitalized as part of eight people who were rescued by Phoenix firefighters off Camelback Mountain on the Echo Canyon Trail on Thursday.

Five hikers were rescued by helicopter or a big wheel basket, while three others were able to walk down with assistance from firefighters, the Phoenix Fire Department said in a press release.

Three people were taken to the hospital in stable condition for heat-related injuries.

They were a 42-year-old woman, a 50-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, authorities said.

The hikers were mostly from out of state and part of a women’s retreat group.

They began their trek up the mountain around 7 a.m. with no more than one small bottle of water, Phoenix Fire said.

The rescue operation proved difficult for firefighters as the hikers were spread out over several mile markers on the trail, authorities said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
