PHOENIX – A toddler was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday night and his babysitter arrested after he nearly drowned during a bath at her West Valley home, authorities said.

The El Mirage Police Department said the 1-year-old boy was found unresponsive after he slipped underwater.

Cynthia Gaddy, 49, was accused of leaving him and a 3-year-old sibling alone for several minutes during a bath while she went to another part of her house around 8:30 p.m.

Emergency crews performed life-saving measures on the boy and took him to an area hospital; he was later airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Gaddy was booked on charges of child endangerment.

She had been watching three children, the oldest at 7, who had been dropped off at her home near El Mirage and Waddell roads.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

No other information was made available.
