PHOENIX — An Arizona man was sentenced on Monday to a year and one day in prison after he plead guilty to tax evasion, authorities said.

James Steele Saunders, 60, of Kingman, evaded paying taxes for 15 years, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said in a press release.

He didn’t file timely income taxes with the IRS from 2003 to 2013 and failed to cooperate with the IRS after a revenue officer was assigned to collect the taxes owed for 2003 and solicit tax returns for 2004 to 2008.

Saunders in 2014 also began funneling income through a third party in an attempt to deceive the agency and continued this until February 2018, authorities said.

In addition to his prison term, Saunders was ordered to pay $180,079 in restitution to the IRS. This represents the income taxes he failed to pay from 2008 to 2017, authorities said.

The IRS’ Criminal Investigation division conducted the probe of Saunders’ case.
