PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation on Tuesday began a project to repave 29 miles of southbound Interstate 17 out of Flagstaff.

The project stretches from the Interstate 40 interchange to the Coconino County line at milepost 312 and promises to deliver a smooth driving surface and repair damage from winter weather, according to a press release.

Work on the $34.9 million project is slated to last until summer 2024 with a stoppage during the winters, ADOT said.

Drivers can expect the highway to be restricted to one lane in locations between Kachina Boulevard and south of Munds Park as work gets underway, and there will also be lane restrictions from mileposts 333 to 331 and from 323 to 321, ADOT said.

As work is completed, crews will move to different locations along the corridor.

Several on- and off-ramps and nine bridges will also be repaved, ADOT said.

In fall 2019, crews completed pavement replacement on northbound I-17 along the same stretch as the southbound project.
