PHOENIX – Officials are warning parents about parties promoted on social media after a teenage girl was killed at a such a gathering in Phoenix over the weekend.
“As Phoenix police detectives processed the extensive crime scene, talked with witnesses and followed up on leads, they learned the party that killed one and injured eight others was promoted on social media,” Phoenix Police Sgt. Philip Krynsky said in a press release Monday.
The party where the shooting took place early Saturday is an example of a troubling trend, police said.
“Those showing up have no idea who is holding the party and who might show up. These gatherings have led to shootings, drug use, property damage and quality-of-life concerns for those living nearby,” Krynsky said.
“We are encouraging parents to be vigilant with your child’s social media use and be aware of curfew laws for those who are underage.”
Police responded to a shooting call at a strip mall parking lot near 10th Avenue and Hatcher Road around 1 a.m. Saturday.
Officers found nine victims, including a 14-year-old girl who died after being taken to a hospital.
Two women were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and were in critical condition as of Monday, police said.
Five men and a teenage boy suffered injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.
Police said they are following up on all the tips and video they’ve received as part of the investigation into the incident.
