PHOENIX — Central Avenue will be closed at the Salt River Bridge in Phoenix during the next three weekends for reinforcement work as part of the South Central Extension/Downtown Hub light rail project.
The roadway will be closed from 10 p.m. Fridays through 5 a.m. Mondays until June 27, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Crews will make improvements so the bridge, located south of U.S. 60 on Central Avenue, can support the light rail trains ahead of the project’s expected completion in 2024.
Motorists won’t be able to use Central Avenue from Watkins Street to Rio Salado Scenic Drive during the closure.
Possible detours include using Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street to cross the Salt River.
Bus stops between Buckeye and Broadway roads on Central Avenue will also be closed during those times.
Valley Metro’s 5.5-mile project, which will connect south Phoenix with the downtown corridor, is estimated to cost $1.35 billion.
People can keep track of progress on the project by downloading the Construct VM app on both iOS and Android devices, featuring photos and videos of the construction, frequently asked questions and information on locals businesses around the extension.
