PHOENIX — There were fewer DUI arrests over the Memorial Day weekend in Arizona this year than last, the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety said Tuesday.

From Friday through Monday, 449 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Another 102 people were cited for extreme DUI, meaning they had a blood alcohol content of .15 or higher.

The average known BAC of those arrested over the holiday this year was 0.147, lower than the 0.153 recorded in 2020 and 2021. The legal BAC in Arizona is 0.08.

During the holiday in 2021, 589 people were arrested for DUI and 138 more were cited for extreme DUI.

The holiday in 2020, which was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, had 409 people arrested for DUI with an additional 73 people being cited for extreme DUI.

It was also noted that 110 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs this year, fewer than the 157 recorded last year and the 170 arrests in 2020.

Law enforcement conducted a total of 12,829 traffic stops compared to 12,702 in 2021. Officers made 9,548 traffic stops over the holiday in 2020.

We want to hear from you.
