PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department on Tuesday will unveil a memorial for Officer Ginarro New, who died last year in a collision with a red-light runner.

The historical marker will be located at the southeast corner of Cave Creek Road and Greenway Parkway, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release.

The city of Phoenix honors police officers and firefighters who have died with signs to mark where they made the ultimate sacrifice, the department said.

New, who joined the department in July 2019, was killed at the age of 27 on May 31, 2021, when a car driven by 31-year-old Christopher Castro sped through the intersection and slammed into his patrol Tahoe.

Both men died as a result of the impact.

Cave Creek Road will be restricted in both directions from Greenway Parkway to Monte Cristo Avenue for a short ceremony that is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

We want to hear from you.
