PHOENIX — Overdue fines were scrapped from the Chandler Public Library at a recent board meeting, officials said.
The decision, approved on May 17, comes in light of recent studies that have shown overdue fines “only create barriers” for those with financial hardships, according to a press release.
“One of the pillars of library service is equitable access,” Rachelle Kuzyk, library manager, said in the release.
“Removing fines for overdue materials will ensure that everyone who is seeking information can find it at the Chandler Public Library.”
Along with the removal of overdue fines, the board voted to reduce printing costs from 20 cents to 10 cents for black and white prints and $1 to 25 cents for color prints.
The fee to replace lost or damaged items will remain in place.
