PHOENIX — A robbery suspect was in custody after allegedly exchanging gunfire with police in north Phoenix on Tuesday, authorities said.

Jose Samaniego Chacon Jr., 25, had barricaded himself in a home around near 32nd Street and Union Hills Drive around 4 p.m., the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release.

Chacon surrendered after several hours and taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, authorities said.

After he was released from the hospital, Chacon was booked into jail on 17 counts of aggravated assault against police, burglary, attempted armed robbery plus other offenses, police said.

Police said the incident started when Chacon, who was a suspect in a robbery attempt in the area, fled after being spotted by an officer.

Chacon broke into a empty house and when several police and a K9 searching the neighborhood got closer, he fired multiple rounds at them, police said.

Officers returned fire.

Negotiators arrived and talked with Chacon for hours before he gave himself up.

One officer was hurt by shrapnel but did not need hospitalization.

It was the 11th shooting of the year by Phoenix police and 23rd overall by law enforcement in the Valley, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
