PHOENIX – Crews did battle with a smoky fire at a Phoenix scrapyard on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
A passerby reported the blaze around noon after seeing flames coming from stacked vehicles in the yard at Broadway Road and 27th Avenue, the Phoenix Fire Department said in a press release.
“Access issues made for specific challenges to overcome but crews were able to gain entry points and set up ladder trucks for an elevated master stream approach,” Capt. Scott Douglas said in the release.
“With a perimeter established, firefighters were able to stop the advancing body of the wind-driven fire.”
The main fire was under control by around 1:30 p.m., but crews remained on site clean up hot spots.
Broadway Road was expected to remain closed between 19th and 27th avenues for several hours, the Phoenix Police Department said.
