Max the horse retires after 15 years serving the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office

May 18, 2022, 4:25 AM

PHOENIX — A horse that has served the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for the last 15 years is riding off into the sunset and calling it a career.

Max the horse has assisted deputies with patrol, on search and rescue missions, trained new riders and helped honor fallen law enforcement officers throughout the county, according to a tweet on Monday announcing the retirement.

People have also seen Max at school and community events during his time with the sheriff’s office.

The Memorial Tribute Ceremony this past weekend was Max’s last event before retiring, the sheriff’s office said.

Max was known as an all-star because little to nothing would spook him, the sheriff’s office said, and even continued serving after having cancer in his right eye removed in 2016.

We want to hear from you.
