PHOENIX — The northbound lanes of Interstate 17 in north Phoenix are set to be closed overnight starting Tuesday for work on Valley Metro’s light rail northwest extension project.
Northbound I-17 is scheduled to be closed between Northern and Peoria avenues from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday nights and from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday night, the Arizona Department of Transportation said in a press release.
The northbound I-17 on-ramps at Bethany Home Road and Glendale Avenue are also set to be closed.
Southbound I-17 will also be narrowed to one lane, with the right lane open, between Peoria and Northern avenues during the same time periods.
Southbound I-17 on-ramps at Thunderbird Road, Cactus Road and Peoria Avenue will also close for the project, ADOT said.
Valley Metro crews will use the closure to pour concrete decks for light rail bridges over the freeway, ADOT said.
The 1.6-mile northwest extension will push the line from its current final stop at 19th and Dunlap avenues over Interstate 17 and end at an elevated platform on the west side of what was once Metrocenter Mall.
The project is expected to be finished in 2024.
