PHOENIX — A man was charged last week with two counts in connection with allegedly taking a minor from Tucson to South Carolina to engage in criminal sexual activity, authorities said Monday.
Timothy Mikell Schultheis, aka Jackson Oden, 24, of South Carolina, if convicted, faces a minimum penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life for transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said in a press release.
He also faces a maximum of 30 years behind bars for travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual activity if found guilty of the crime, authorities said.
The 12-year-old girl was reported missing after she left her home on March 20 and did not return, authorities said.
Her Facebook account revealed she had been allegedly communicating with Schultheis and included plans for him to travel from South Carolina and pick up the girl in Safford, as well as his intention to engage in sexual conduct with her, authorities said.
The girl was found in Schultheis’ apartment when he was arrested on March 30, authorities said.
Investigation of the case was conducted by the FBI in Sierra Vista and the Graham County Sheriff’s Department.
