PHOENIX — There were fewer DUI arrests over the Cinco De Mayo holiday in Arizona this year than last, the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety said Monday.

From Wednesday through Friday, 334 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Another 58 people were cited for extreme DUI, meaning they had a blood alcohol content of .15 or higher.

The average known BAC of those arrested over the holiday this year was 0.142, lower than last year’s 0.161 and the 0.163 recorded in 2020. The legal BAC in Arizona is 0.08.

During the holiday in 2021 that spanned five days, 444 people were arrested for DUI and 120 more were cited for extreme DUI.

The holiday in 2020, which also spanned five days and was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, had 148 people arrested for DUI with an additional 39 people being cited for extreme DUI.

It was also noted that 90 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs this year, fewer than the 146 recorded last year but more than the 58 arrests in 2020.

Law enforcement conducted a total of 8,341 traffic stops compared to 10,129 in 2021. Officers made 5,082 traffic stops over the holiday in 2020.
