PHOENIX — An Arizona Department of Transportation employee who lost his life two years ago in a work zone crash was honored this week with a ceremony at Sunset Point rest area.
Frank Dorizio’s name on Thursday was added to a monument at the rest area that is dedicated to employees who were killed in the line of duty, ADOT said in a press release.
The department said Dorizio’s death served as a tragic reminder for drivers to pay attention when approaching and traveling through work zones.
“We never want to add another name to the Sunset Point memorial,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said in the release.
“I’d like people to understand that Frank could have been a close friend or their father or brother. He was dedicated to making things safer for all of us. Take his loss to heart and use caution around highway workers when you’re behind the wheel.”
Dorizio, 55, was struck by a vehicle along Interstate 10 north of Casa Grande while he was placing a sign alerting drivers of a pavement repair project, ADOT said.
He joined ADOT in 2015 and was a member of the agency’s Incident Response Unit, which sets up traffic control, removes debris and assists stranded motorists on metro Phoenix freeways.
Prior to that, he was a highway operations worker in northern Arizona and Phoenix.
