PHOENIX – A man suspected of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend in Apache Junction was arrested in Southern California on Wednesday, authorities said.
U.S. Marshals Service officers took Ulises A. Cruz Peraza, 34, into custody without incident in the Los Angeles suburb of Pico Rivera, an Apache Junction spokesman said in a press release.
Peraza was wanted in the shooting death of 28-year-old Maria Guadalupe Godinez Ramirez. Investigators learned that Ramirez had been in a relationship with Peraza but took out an order of protection against him in December 2021 after she started fearing for her life, according to the release.
Ramirez called 911 around 4 p.m. Sunday and reported that she’d been shot. She had multiple gunshot wounds when officers located her in a car off Old West Highway east of Idaho Road, and she died after being taken to a hospital.
U.S. Marshals worked with the Apache Junction Police Department to find Peraza and his vehicle, which had been seen at the scene of the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing. Anybody with information was asked to call Apache Junction Police at 480-982-8260.
